.
Today we will talk about the differences between Ambergris (whale droppings or sea amber) and Amber which comes from tree sap. Amber is often mixed with sweet scents such as vanilla, patchouli, labdanum (sap from the cistus leaves), and styrax (frankincense), which gives a feeling of intensity, spiciness, warmth, and mystery. This scent is made from the sap of various fragrant trees until it is dark yellow or brown, similar to amber, making the scent more intense and full of warmth. Amber is a scent that is commonly found in perfume ingredients but is a complicated scent in the perfumery field. It usually has a strong aroma and may contain hints of spices and herbs, but this scent gives a feeling of warmth, softness, and sweetness, making it a great choice, especially for fall and winter.

Naturally, amber took many years to produce. It’s not just the sap from old trees, but it is quite soft and gooey, attractive, and fascinating. Actually, it has a very light scent, but it will smell like a pine tree when burning.
Amber can be divided into 3 types:
1. Ambroxan
Ambroxan is an ingredient of natural origin found in whale droppings (Ambergris). After the whale released Ambergris, it took many years to harden and develop into a sweet scent. However, perfumers can’t wait that long, so they synthesize Ambroxan to imitate this scent. Ambroxan is synthesized from Sclareol, a naturally occurring molecule from the core of clary sage. It has a mesmerizing scent of wood, leather, and a slightly spicy scent, ending with a sweet scent. Therefore it is known as Modern Ambergris. With a scent that is sexy but very delicate, it is widely used to make the scent of perfume more complex. Additionally, Bloomberg News reports that Ambergris is one of the top three most expensive perfume ingredients in the present which is not surprising because it comes from the intestines of sperm whales.
2. Labdanum Absolute
Labdanum is the sap produced from the Cistus Ladaniferus, which grows in Mediterranean countries and has a sweet scent. Before being used in perfumes, the hard rubber must be heat-melted first. Currently, we use 33% of this tree sap in perfumery.
3. Benzoin
Benzoin, or styrax benzoin, is another plant resin that comes from the bark of a tree called Styrax. It is normally used in perfumery. As it became more popular, it became a main ingredient in benzoin perfumes, which is considered an excellent ingredient that helps the scent of perfumes smell longer.
